RESIDENTS have criticised an "atrociously dangerous" pedestrian crossing close to a new York Park & Ride.

Locals have complained about the new lights at the top of Station Road and the A59 close to the Poppleton Park&Ride, which have apparently caused confusion for drivers.

Residents have reported drivers travelling through the traffic lights while the pedestrian crossing showed the green man on numerous occasions in recent weeks.

Sarah Parker, who lives nearby, said she and her two children had faced danger and verbal abuse from motorists when they pointed out that they had the right to cross.

She said: "For the fourth time in eight pedestrian crossings I and my children have made on a Saturday we have been subjected to cars going through the lights when the green man is on.

"Twice now I have had drivers gesticulating at me and pointing to the green arrow, for the cars turning onto the road from Station Road telling me that the lights for cars are on green. They are looking at the wrong lights - this should be impossible but clearly is not the case."

Darren Capes, Transport Systems Manager at City of York Council, said: “Measures to improve the traffic signal heads and minor alterations to signal phasing have already been taken to address instances of vehicles misreading the signals and setting off at the wrong time.

"The effects of these changes are being closely monitored and we are investigating any possible further alterations to the operation of the junction, which will be made should this be necessary.”
