THE final resting place of legendary highwayman Dick Turpin is getting a bit of a spruce up.

Council workers and volunteers from Aviva, who are part of the York Cares partnership, will help to improve the area in and around St George’s Burial Ground this week.

The team will be removing hedging from the front of the burial ground to try and open up the space and make it more welcoming to the public.

Volunteers will also put in a new bark chip footpath which will begin at the entrance and lead visitors to the site where Dick Turpin is buried.

Cllr Sonja Crisp, Cabinet member for tourism, said: “Smarter York and York Cares are two great initiatives that promote collaborative working to help benefit everyone in York.

"The work at St George’s Burial Ground will go a long way to making the area more welcoming to residents and visitors.”
