MEDIEVAL warfare will be under the spotlight as part of the Illuminating York events.

The Richard III Experience, housed in Monk Bar is welcoming visitors during Illuminating York to discover Medieval battle techniques within the ancient fortifications.

The top floor of Monk Bar, which was was commissioned by the last Plantagenet Monarch, Richard III, will be bathed in atmospheric candlelight and guests will be met by a soldier in period dress.

The event promises to transport guests back to the guardroom of late 15th century York.

Danielle Daglan, head of festivals and events at York Archaeological Trust, said: “The later medieval period saw a series of civil wars throughout England, that we now call The Wars of the Roses.

"As you can imagine the constant state of war throughout the realm led to many innovations in weapons and battle tactics, which we will explore during this candlelit event,”

The event will take place as part of Illuminating York and will run from from Wednesday to Saturday, 6pm to 9pm.

Now in its ninth year, Illuminating York's theme this year is York’s Leading Lights, and the central artwork is 'Hidden Worlds' which will be projected onto York Crown Court.

Hidden Worlds is a 3D projection-mapped animation intended to "take the audience on a journey into the hidden worlds of the microscopic and the unconscious".

Hidden Worlds is inspired by York’s John Snow, the 19th century physician who not only discovered how cholera spread, but also went on to pioneer the use of anaesthetics – saving countless lives and misery for those undergoing surgery.

The work has been created by Seeper who have worked in digital projection mapping for the past 15 years.

During Illuminating York, Clifford’s Tower will be floodlit in colour to complement the main event ‘Hidden Worlds’ projection on the adjacent Crown Court Building.
