A SCHOOL girl from York is to star alongside Catherine Zeta Jones in the new Dad's Army film.

Nine-year-old Cassie Wells from Acomb, is a pupil at Carr Junior School and has been chosen as an extra and asked to be available for filming in Bridlington in November.

He dad, Jamie, 43, a mortgage adviser, said: "She is very excited about this as it is her first experience as an extra in films and she will hopefully get to meet some of the starts including Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

"Cassie loves performing and wants to pursue this as a career even though she is only young, she has taken part in a number of local theatre productions and in May of this year she had her first lead role playing Molly in York Stage Musicals performance of Annie at the Grand Opera House. She was also an extra on York soprano and songwriter Rebecca Newman's Christmas Video last year so she is no stranger to the camera."

As previously reported in The Press Bridlington is to star as Walmington-on-Sea in the film which stars Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring, Bill Nighy as Sergeant Wilson, Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones, Michael Gambon as Private Godfrey, Danny Mays as the spivvish Private Walker, and Blake Harrison as Private Pike, Captain Mainwaring's 'stupid boy'.

Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta Jones plays glamorous journalist Rose Winters, who has come to write about the platoon's exploits.

Mr Wells, who is married to Michelle and also has a son, Lucas, 15, said: "We're really proud of Cassie, acting is all she wants to do. We're not quite sure where she gets it from, neither me nor Michelle have a background in acting. All I can put it down to is that we love the theatre and have taken the kids to show and events from a really young age."
