1) MOVIE-MAKERS are planning a film to dramatise this year’s Grand Depart in York. Tour bidders from Welcome to Yorkshire have held talks with scriptwriters over making a feature-length British comedy in the same vein as Golden Globe-nominated Calendar Girls.

York hosted the second stage of the world-famous Tour de France in July when the region held three stages in the county before riders set off for the rest of the race around France. Scriptwriters are expected to return to the county in the next few weeks as they continue work on a script, but an investor is needed before work can begin.

 

2) A FORMER lawyer has written a series of children’s ebooks. The Shellies are based around the Yorkshire coast, and written by Ian R Kaye, from Hornsea.

York Press: York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir Summer Concert
3 )FESTIVE concerts by the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and the Fossgate Ladies Choir will be held in Fossgate this December. The concerts will be held at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall between Tuesday, December 2, and Thursday, December 4. Tickets cost £12 and are available now from the Hall.

 

4) A new scheme to tackle isolation in sparsely populated rural areas is launching in Hambleton this week. A programme of social activities is being provided through ‘Primetime’, which is being piloted in Husthwaite, near Easingwold.

It is funded throughby North Yorkshire County Council’s Innovation Fund and run by Hambleton District Council and North Yorkshire Sport. The sessions are open to all and include boccia and new age curling and take place at Husthwaite Village Hall each Friday until December 12: at 10–11am or 11am–noon. The sessions cost £1 and refreshments are included.

 

5) HARROGATE post office has been reopened after a major refurbishment. The new look branch now has an open-plan layout and three new self-service kiosks to reduce waiting times.

The branch also has a private consultation room where customers can speak to specialist advisors about financial services products, homephone and broadband services.

 

6) RESIDENTS in Cliffe have been urged to report any sightings of a silver Ford Mondeo, registration AU53 UAL, which North Yorkshire Police said has been seen in suspicious circumstances in the area.
 

7) A NEW indoor golf course will be open in York this winter. A six-week programme for golfers of all abilities will run from Monday, November 10, at Burnholme Community Sports Hub in Bad Bargain Lane, between 7pm and 8pm. 8) THE Pets at Home store in Clifton Moor is hosting a charity fundraising day for Dogs for the Disabled on Sunday, November 2. The shop is running a breakfast from 9am to 10am, before opening hours, in return for donations and during the day there will be quizzes, word searches and cake sales.

 

9) APPRENTICES are helping to create the new Selby leisure centre. Oliver Whitehead, apprentice electrician, and James Riley, apprentice plumber, are working on the project, which is due to be completed early next year, and are employed by mechanical and electrical subcontractor AF Connell and with construction company Wates.

Councillor Gillian Ivey, deputy leader of Selby District Council, said: "We hope this will be the first of many opportunities for young people. On-the-job training is so valuable for young people and allows them to move on to long-term good-quality careers. Selby District Council will do everything it can to help young people be more employable."

The new leisure centre, on the site of the former Abbey Leisure Centre which burned down, and will include a larger gym, health and fitness suite, multi-purpose activity hall, fitness studio, an all-weather sports pitch, sauna and steam room. There will be two swimming pools - a training pool and a six-lane 25m pool.

10) COACH drivers and operators are reminded they must book parking spaces for York’s St Nicholas Fayre Christmas Market ahead of the event, which runs for over three weeks from Thursday November 27 to Sunday December 21.

 

11) A FIREWORKS event is being held at Thirsk Racecourse to raise money for Herriot’s Hospice. The event on Saturday, November 1 is being organised by Thirsk Rotary Club. Beginning at 5.30pm, there will be covered areas open in the family stand in case of bad weather, and free parking as well as live music, hot food, sweet doughnut and coffee stalls, children rides and an undercover bouncy castle.
