DESERT warfare during the First World War and life in the Roman legion are two of the topics youngsters can explore inside the city's museums this half term.

Great War veteran Frank Wood will tell his story at York Castle Museum as visitors join him on a fictional mission in the Middle East.

They can also take a closer look at medals and the people behind them, and sample Trench Cake.

At the Yorkshire Museum, visitors can handle Roman artefacts from the collections, enjoy a talk from one of the curators and join in with hands-on activities.

Creative children can build their own Roman catapult based on replicas from the famous army's armoury during a special session on Wednesday.

All activities are included in admission which is free to York Card holders, with all children under 16 entitled to free entry with a paying adult.

Emma Williams, assistant curator of Science and Archaeology Learning, said: “We have put together some great activities for families to enjoy this half term that look at objects from our collections and give an insight to what life would have been like for a Roman legionary."
