VOLUNTEERS from York workplaces have completed a second day's work at Foxwood Community Centre, transforming an under-used garden into an outdoor space for the whole community.

The centre is the site of the York Cares Big Community Challenge 2014, which began on Monday and will see around 200 volunteers pitch in over the three day project.

Yesterday, volunteering project officer Helen Jackson said the unexpectedly good weather had given the work a welcome boost.

"We have got a lot of concreting done, laid the base for a new barbecue, built three raised beds, painted an office, and replanted the flower beds at the front of the centre."

Volunteers from Aviva, Northern Rail, DE Ford, Langleys Solicitors, City of York Council and others were all involved yesterday, as well as staff from the estates team at the University of York who put their expertise to good use planting up the new flower beds.

Helen also thanked construction company Evora who supervise much of the building work, and source materials for the project through their supply chains.

She added: "We certainly couldn't do this without them."

The Big Community Challenge finishes tomorrow, and the volunteers hope to have the transformed community garden ready for the regular volunteers who run the community centre to manage in the long term.
