THE wallaby which was captured by police in York is settling into its new home and has become the topic of classes at a local college.

The marsupial, nicknamed Wesley, was responsible for North Yorkshire Police closing a section of York’s ring road earlier this month, while a vet and more than a dozen officers and staff from Askham Bryan College tried to capture it before it caused an accident.

Since it was caught on Thursday, October 9, Wesley has been kept at the college as part of a 21-day quarantine, but its owner still has not come forward to claim him.

Sarah Keith, lecturer in animal management at the college, said: “Wesley has settled in well with us. He’s getting more and more used to his surroundings and is eating well. We have had a number of inquiries about him, but so far haven’t managed to match him up with his owner.

“Wesley’s becoming a firm favourite with students, though we are limiting the access to him. The staff here are looking after him, but we are including teaching sessions on wallaby husbandry and handling techniques in student lectures.”
