BOOKWORMS with a passion for swords, shields and horned helmets are to tackle a page turning competition.

The Bloodaxe Book Challenge - named after the Viking Centre's Eric Bloodaxe - wants youngsters to pick up a paperback and read as much as they can to be in with a chance of winning a place at a unique event.

Readers are being asked to complete four books with a history theme between October 25 and January 18 next year.

To be in with a chance of meeting a popular author during JORVIK Viking Festival next year, youngsters must collect stickers for their special bookmark.

Last year's guest author was Horrid Henry creator Francesca Simon, and organisers are expected to announce another big name from the world of children's fiction in the coming weeks.

Jane Stockdale, head of audience development for JORVIK, said: "I am delighted we are running this challenge again and working with libraries in York.

"It has proved extremely popular with young readers, and we hope it encourages everyone to make the most of the fabulous resources at their local library.

To celebrate the beginning of the challenge there will be a free story telling sessions at Acomb Explore from 1pm to 3pm on October 25 and 26 where children can hear tales of Viking adventures from actors.

Youngsters can also take part in craft activities too.

Sue Matthews, children and young people's librarian for Explore, added: "We are very pleased to again be working with Jorvik to offer another exciting opportunity for children of all ages to challenge themselves and have some fun along the way.

"Reading for pleasure is what it's all about."For more information about the challenge visit www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk/bloodaxe
