A MAN who used a fake Bulgarian driving licence to try and get a UK driving licence must do 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

York Crown Court heard how Ergun Yesil, 40, wanted to get mobile without paying for driving lessons because he had financial problems.

Recorder Eric Elliott QC said as he passed sentence: “You have brought shame upon yourself and your family.”

But because both Yesil and his wife were hard-working and short of money, he would not send him to jail.

Instead, he ordered him to do 100 hours unpaid work and pay a £60 statutory surcharge.

Yesil, of Highfield Crescent, Barlby, pleaded guilty to possessing a forged ID document with intent and fraud.

Prosecuting, Nick Adlington said Yesil, who was born in Turkey, was a naturalised British citizen of dual nationality.

On January 28, he applied to DVLA for a full British driving licence and enclosed his Turkish passport as proof of his identity and the fake Bulgarian driving licence. “It was in fact a poor counterfeit,” said the prosecuting barrister and led to Yesil’s arrest.

On March 23, he told police he had only intended to apply for a provisional licence and had ticked the box for a full licence by mistake.

He claimed an assistant in a DVLA office had suggested he send it with his UK licence application as extra proof of his identity.
