Life has changed dramatically for 24-year-old Harry Baines since the start of this year.

He has undergone treatment and been given the all-clear from cancer, got married to his girlfriend Phoebe, and has just landed his dream job as the Macmillan fundraising manager for York and North Yorkshire.

The former York Press Community Pride winner was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma four years ago but was told the cancer had returned in January.

Radiation therapy was a success and Harry is now celebrating landing a new job to help coordinate fundraising for Macmillan in order to help other people currently coping with the disease.

Harry, from Fulford, said: "The aim of Macmillan is to make sure no-one faces cancer alone. Unfortunately we can't reach everyone.

"The services in York are so important, they help people everyday."

Harry won the Charity Fundraiser of the Year award at the The Press 2012 Community Pride Awards after he cycled through England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and for the automotive charity, BEN, after being given the all-clear from cancer.

He said he had been supported by the charity when he has sometimes struggled to talk to his close network of friends and family about cancer.

"The first time around I didn't have much to do with Macmillan. It was harder to hear I had cancer this time around," Harry said. "I did use Macmillan's support line and that helped me open up to the friends and family around me. I had a network of people desperate to help but I wasn't really letting them help."

Harry will now support individuals and businesses who want to fundraise for Macmillan in York and North Yorkshire and is involved in a series of events including a race day next summer and organising a Christmas dinner.

Harry would like to hear from individuals and businesses who would like to fundraise for the charity and would like any support with their efforts and raising their profile. He is also urging businesses to consider choosing Macmillan as their charity of the year. To get in touch with him, email hbaines@macmillan.org.uk or call 07473541337.
