DISCOUNT retail chain Home Bargains has been given the go-ahead to open another store in York, which it says will create 50 jobs.

The firm plans to open in Foss Islands Retail Park, in the shop formerly occupied by Dreams.

As reported in The Press last month, the company needed City of York Council to lift an old planning restriction on the type of goods that can be sold at the site, and the council has now done so.

Home Bargains sells a range of food, drink, cosmetics, toys and household items, and is planning to increase its reach from 320 stores to more than 700 over the next five years. The Foss Islands shop will be its second in York, adding to the one it has at Clifton Moor.

The Press reported last month that the retailer planned to commit to a 15-year lease on the site.

The developers said they had tried for 16 months to fill the shop in line with the restrictions on the retail park but had been unable to do so.
