1) The Environment Agency is investigating reports of a fuel spillage on the River Ouse downstream of York’s Millennium Bridge. A boater who reported the spillage on Thursday evening said the fuel covered the whole river from his boat. A agency spokesman said spillages were not uncommon, and a pint of oil could cover an area of water the size of a football pitch.

2) Preparations are under way for the Lord Mayor’s Valentine charity ball at York Racecourse’s Voltigeur Suite on February 14.

The ball, which will raise funds for York Against Cancer and the York Hospital Teaching Charity, will feature a drinks reception, a four course dinner, and then the chance to dance the night away with local band Pure Silk. Early bird tickets are available until November 30 for £55 per person, after which they will cost £65.

3) Police have condemned an 'appalling act of mindless damage' to an historic building in East Yorkshire. Officers said graffiti has been painted around the base of Black Mill in Beverley Westwood.

4) Members of York Philatelic Society were among more than 100 mourners at the funeral at York Crematorium of retired Merchant Navy Captain and past society president, Philip Hyde.

Mr Hyde, of Moor Lane, Strensall, who died earlier this month aged 79, was in the Merchant Navy for 40 years, and served notably in the Baltic and Eastern Europe, going to the aid of a crew on a fire-stricken oil rig in the North Sea on one occasion.

Married to Margaret and with three children, Simon, Louise and Rupert, he enjoyed stamp collecting in retirement.

Current society president Trevor Collins said: “It was a pleasure to know Phil. He was a good man who lived a very full life, and he will be missed by all our members, many of whom drew on his extensive knowledge of stamps and stamp collecting.”

6) Applications are open now for the 2015 Positive Activities Grant, managed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth and family support (YFS) service. 

The fund is designed to benefit young people by grant aiding voluntary youth organisations which provide diversionary positive activity to young people aged from eight to 24. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for organisations that can demonstrate they provide a registration service to voluntary youth organisations across the East Riding.

9) About 3,700 litres of fuel have been stolen from the EYMS bus compound on Bessingby Industrial Estate, Bridlington. The intruder also threw antifreeze inside one of the buses, causing damage.

10) York-based rail operator Grand Central is seeking its first student artist.
It called on budding York artists to submit designs for a competition on the theme Direct to London.
The winner will receive a year of free travel on the company’s services, such as the York to London route, and their artwork will feature on new bags. The competition closes on October 31.

11) A police chief will answer questions about York’s ‘walking policeman’ from residents and parish councillors tomorrow night.

Supt Phil Cain has agreed to attend a half-hour question and answer session in Osbaldwick, which recently hit the national headlines after The Press revealed claims a police community support officer spent up to six hours of his eight hour shift walking between the village and his base at Clifton Moor.

Parish chairman and local city councillor Mark Warters claimed the officer had said he was not allowed to cycle because he had not passed a police proficiency cycling test, and strongly criticised new neighbourhood policing policies. 

The Q & A session is from 7.15pm and 7.45pm, before the start of the full parish council meeting at Osbaldwick Parish Church.

12) Humberside Police has warned internet users about a scam pop-up message claiming to be from the force and asking people to pay a fine for viewing adult content. A concerned resident said they were using the internet when a pop up message appeared suggesting they had done something wrong and needed to pay the force £100 to remove the message. A force spokesman said the message was not from them.

13) Thirteen Young Leaders from Holy Trinity School, Barnsley, have volunteered to work with a Christian charity in Romania as part of their Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders Award.  The students carried out basic building work to lay concrete paths for better access and to improve drainage for a family.

The award is designed to develop leadership skills and encourages students to make a difference for others.

14) Families in Yorkshire and Humberside have seen their spending power rise by £6 a week over the past year, according to the latest ‘income tracker’ issued by Asda.

The report says families had an average of £154 a week of discretionary income in September, up from £148 a year earlier.

However, wage growth remained at an historic low, with salaries struggling to keep pace with the rate of inflation.

15) THE newly refurbished Broadway Post Office has reopened with chocolate giveaways from Mars and Nestle to mark the occasion.

Postmaster Uzmah Zaman and her father Ghulam Rabbani, himself a postmaster for 22 years, started festivities by cutting the ribbon to welcome customers to the branch.

Uzmah said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to open the new branch and I am very pleased to be officially launching it for customers.”

“I’d also like to thank the local community for supporting the branch and my father for being here to cut the ribbon, and our guests for giving out treats to customers.”

The modernised Broadway Post Office is open from 6am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 6am to 1pm on Sunday.

16) Residents in Selby have been urged to report any cold callers offering to lay new driveways and paths in the town.

17) The autumn fayre by St Nicholas Fields’ Environment Centre and Nature Reserve raised £400 for the charity. About 300 people including 100 children took part in a day of activities, including a baking competition, Apple Olympics, and other charity stalls.

18) The three East Riding of Yorkshire Councillors for the Pocklington Provincial Ward, Cllrs Claude Mole, Stephen Lane and Kay West, will hold a surgery next Saturday from 10am to noon in the Pocklington Pocela Centre.  It is a ‘drop in’ session for residents wishing to call in and discuss any issues.

19) Students have planted hundreds of wildflower bulbs at the University of York to create a haven for bees and pollinators. The planting was coordinated by national eco-social enterprise River Of Flowers.
