FLORAL tributes were growing yesterday at the scene of a violent disturbance which ended in the death of a 21-year-old man from York.

Sam Wilson, of Haxby, was hit by a taxi shortly after the incident in Haxby Road, near the Nuffield Hospital, in the early hours of Saturday morning and died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services to save him.

A message on one of the floral tributes read: “Sleep tight now, Sam, taken far too young, was a kind, decent, happy lad.”

Linden Lee Smith, 20, of Kirkham Avenue, Bell Farm, appeared before York Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the manslaughter of Mr Wilson. He was granted conditional bail. The case has been sent to York Crown Court on October 27.

Meanwhile, two other men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the 19 and 20-year-old York men were arrested yesterday on suspicion of manslaughter, and they were last night in police custody.

A 16-year-old girl and 20-year-old woman had previously been released on bail.

Police were initially called to reports of violent disorder. While they were on their way to the incident, they received another call from a taxi driver reporting that his car had collided with a man.

A stretch of Haxby Road was closed for nearly 12 hours after the collision as investigations continued.

Anyone who can help police with their investigation is still asked to phone York CID on 101 or to email yorkcid@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
