INTERNET and telephone services for organisations in the region including councils, universities and colleges have finally been restored.

Several readers contacted The Press yesterday and today to complain that they could not email or call City of York Council after services were badly hit yesterday morning by a cable fault in Leeds.

One raised concerns about the problems for people wanting to register to speak before an area planning sub-committee meeting today and full council tomorrow.

A council spokeswoman said repair works continued through the night and incoming phone lines into the council were restored this morning, while access to the council's website was restored this afternoon.

“Meanwhile, for today’s meetings, the committee chairs have agreed that people can register to speak at the door," she said.

“For tomorrow’s full council meeting, the maximum number of registrations as agreed by the Lord Mayor, have been received.”

The University of York said its phone lines and internet access were both lost yesterday morning but restored by mid-afternoon yesterday.
