THE A64 route to the Yorkshire Coast will close completely this weekend at Rillington, near Malton, to allow for a major re-surfacing project.

The Highways Agency says the road will shut between Rillington Fields and Collinsons Lane, Rillington, from 8pm tomorrow until 6am on Monday.

It says clearly signed diversions will be in place, with drivers travelling east leaving the A64 to travel on the A169 to Pickering, before taking the A170 to Ayton where drivers wishing to travel towards Scarborough will continue along the A170.

Drivers wishing to continue onto the A64 will take the B1261 to Seamer and can re-join the A64. Westbound drivers will follow the same diversion in reverse.

Project manager Steven Wright said the work to provide a safer and smoother road surface had to take place over a weekend due to the depth of carriageway which needed to be resurfaced.

"If the work was carried out overnight, the tarmac would not have sufficient time to cool before the road reopened," he said, adding that the scheme had been carefully planned to avoid the summer holidays.
