CONKER fans from around York will descend on a local pub for an inaugural competition this weekend.

The Open Conker Championship is open to adults and children, with admission fees going directly to charity.

The junior and senior championships will be held at The Gillygate pub from 3pm, with conkers provided by the pub, and live music also due on the day.

Brian Furey is the pub landlord and said he hoped this would be the first of many championships to be held at the venue, which is also used by the community to host plays, concerts and other events.

He said: "Gillygate is a marvellous street and should be celebrated and enjoyed.

"The Open Conker Championship is all about community, shared experiences bring communities together, that, and having a bit of craic. The aim of the Championship is to become an annual social family event and there will be a perpetual trophy that will be on permanent display in the pub."

Entry costs £1 for juniors and £3 for seniors, with all admission fees going to BBC Radio York’s Good Night Sleep Appeal, which supports Martin House Hospice.
