TELEVISION cameras will record thousands of runners as they wind through the streets of York and its surrounding countryside during this year’s Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon.

Channel 4 is set to capture the pain and determination of the run’s 7,000 participants during a documentary to premiere on October 19, a week after the event.

Dream Team Television is producing the 50 minute documentary, and runners will be able to spot themselves when it airs from 7am to 8am.

The show will be fronted by presenters Rob Walker and former-Olympic sprinter Katharine Merry. Rob is the current BBC master of ceremonies for the World Snooker Championships and was the BBC’s Olympics reporter who followed sailor Ben Ainslie’s gold medal exploits in both the Beijing and London games.

He said: “I loved every minute of last year’s race and can’t wait to be back to see if anyone will beat the super-fast time of 2 hours 13 mins set by last year’s winner, Edwin Korir.

“York is a beautiful city and what makes this sporting event so unique is the focus on involving members of the general public, to raise money for charities close to their heart. “Capturing stories of the individual runners within this splendid backdrop is the recipe for a great TV programme.”

A number of other leading broadcasters also intend to screen the completed production later in the autumn including BT Sport, Sky Sports, British Eurosport and a number of overseas sports channels.

Last year, 6,100 runners tackled the route around York and into the surrounding countryside, contributing an estimated £1 million to the local economy.
