A YORK soprano's debut album has stormed to the top of the classical charts.

Rebecca Newman's Dare to Dream beat off competition from Jonas Kaufmann, a classical BRIT award winning artist to reach the coveted spot at the first time of asking.

Dubbed "The People’s Soprano", Rebecca has spent 18 months creating her album, a record that features a live orchestra, some heavy hitters from the classical and pop music world.

She said: "My album sold out on Amazon on the first day and I’ve had reports of HMV stores selling out across the country.

"I don’t think anyone saw me coming – I don’t think I even expected this level of demand for the album! In spite of some fans having difficulty getting their copy this week, we still managed to get to classical number one."
