THE annual York National Book Fair - which is the largest in Europe and now marking its 40th anniversary in the city  - opens at noon tomorrow in the Knavesmire Suite at York Racecourse.

About 150,000 books will be available following the arrival of more than 220 dealers offering rare, antiquarian, unusual and hard to obtain items on all conceivable subjects, including books, prints and maps and ephemera.

Paper makers, calligraphers and bookbinders will also have exhibition stands at the two-day fair.

The first such fair took place in York at the former Old Swan Hotel in Piccadilly in 1974, moved to the Assembly Rooms in the following year and then on to the York Barbican before settling in at the Racecourse in 2008.

Organisers say each move was prompted by pressure for space to accommodate booksellers and the eager following from collectors and the wider public.

Admission is £2.00 per person while children get free entry.
