A CANCER survivor has created an online charity auction to raise vital funds for a little known cancer.

Penny Coles, 41, from Holgate, got the all-clear from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in February.

Whilst highly treatable and the most common cancer affecting the under 30s, few people know about the cancer and its symptoms.

First diagnosed in August 2013, Penny underwent a course of chemotherapy to treat the cancer which affects the lymphatic system.

With her life back on track, Penny, a freelancer working in publicity, said she felt determined to help the Lymphoma Association.

She is auctioning a piece of work by Hove-based artist Kirsty Craghill.

She said: “Kirsty painted one of her signature pieces, a cow completely in purple for the Lymphoma Association’s Pitch up in Purple campaign.

“Called 50 Shades of Purple, it not only reflects the many textures of Kirsty’s style, but also the many states of mind I went through when overcoming my illness.”

Penny had inquired about the artwork herself and after hearing she had been unwell, Kirsty offered to donate her work in support of the charity.

Penny said: “Getting the cancer was a massive shock, but realising it was treatable was a massive relief.

“To me, the painting is beautiful and poignant. Undeniably sad, but overwhelmingly the colour purple speaks of life and hope. It is fantastic to be completely over it and to have my life back on track again. I just wanted to help by raising money for those who are also affected by this illness.”

The piece will be listed on ebay until Sunday, September 21, when it will be available to the highest bidder.

It coincides with the Lymphoma Association’s Lymphatic Cancer Awareness Week and all proceeds will go to the charity.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer which develops in the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands spread throughout your body.

The most common symptom of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a painless swelling in a lymph node, usually in the neck, armpit or groin. Other symptoms can include night sweats, unexplained weight loss and persistent tiredness or fatigue.
