MOTORISTS have been urged to drive carefully when approaching Leeman Road, after traffic lights were damaged today.

City of York Council has confirmed the traffic light pole has been knocked down, but the circumstances surrounding the damage have not yet been determined.

The lights are currently out of commission at the junction of Leeman Road and Station Avenue, and the area is cordoned off for pedestrians.

Traffic can still use the junction, but a council spokeswoman said motorists should drive with caution while repairs take place.

She said: "We have made the area safe and ensured no pedestrians are allowed near the lights until they are fixed.

"The road is still open, but we advise drivers to be cautious when near the area. Our engineer is out at the scene at the moment."

One bus passenger, who did not wish to be named, said the bottom of the pole "looked all rotten", and said the lack of lights could cause problems at rush hour.

He said: "They've been very lucky. That side of the footpath hardly gets used, and it hadn't fallen into the road. It looks as though it's fallen back towards the bar walls.

"It might cause problems later on, if there are no traffic lights working at about 4pm or 4.30pm."

It is not clear when the repairs will be complete.
