WALMGATE is to close from lunchtime today for urgent sewer repairs.

Yorkshire Water have announced they need to close the road to work on a collapsed sewer, from 1pm today.

A spokesman said: “We’d like to apologise to any customers in the area that will be inconvenienced by this work. We are aware several businesses are based in this area and we’d ask them to bear with us while we carry out this essential work.

“We’ll be working hard to complete the repair as quickly and efficiently as possible but, as this is a significant repair, we expect this work to take seven days.”

Following that, the Walmgate Bar junction where Walmgate, Foss Islands Road, Barbican Road and Lawrence Street meet will be closed in the evenings for resurfacing.

The city council has announced that the area will be closed from 6.30pm to 11pm Monday to Friday, from Monday, September 8 for two weeks.

A signed diversion route will be in place, but pedestrian access will be available at all times. Cyclists are asked to dismount and use the footways when travelling through the affected areas.

A council spokesman has said that while every effort will be made to minimise disruption, there will be some delays to traffic, and drivers are asked to plan their journeys ahead.
