LONDON four piece Dry The River’s second album is a great example of producers helping shape a record, but no worse for that.

The band worked with producers behind Florence And The Machine, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, with arrangements and strings by an ex-colleague of Sigur Ros and Bjork, and from the opening title track, it’s easy to play ‘spot the influence’. The strongest similarities throughout the album include Florence... Elbow, with a little Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro and The Killers to boot, while It Was Love That Laid Us Low smacks of post-Smiths era Morrissey, both lyrically and musically.

Latest single Gethsemane is even more Morrissey-like, with lyrics such as “there’s a parabolic story but it’s boring and it ends how you’d expect”, and “now you’re everywhere I go, looking faintly disappointed”. But it works, and lead singer Peter Liddle carries off unwieldy lyrics with a nonchalance that makes them seem right, and the driving guitars and drums tie together a detailed, interesting work.
