SINGERS are sought for a special charity performance of Handel's Messiah in Ripon Cathedral on Saturday, October 18.

"As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza unfolds, the suffering inflicted on children is the most harrowing of all," says Sue Cooke, who is organising next month's concert in aid of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).

"This charity event is a special way of channelling concern into practical support for families in Gaza, through the work of MAP.

"I'm planning to bring together a chorus of 200 singers, to fill Ripon Cathedral with the glorious music of Handel's most famous choral work, to raise the roof and reach a target of £2,000 for MAP's ongoing projects for malnourished children in Gaza. So, if you enjoy singing, now is the time sign up for this unique event."

Rehearsal for singers will begin at 1pm; the concert will start at 7pm. "A treat is also in store for those who prefer not to sing, as the evening performance will include a chamber orchestra under the musical direction of Alistair Hardie," says Sue.

Tickets for singers and the audience alike are £14. To find out more, pick up a leaflet with full details from York Visitors Centre, Museum Street, York or email sue@j-cooke.net.

MAP is a registered UK charity "working for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees".

It delivers health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement. Working in partnership with local health providers and hospitals, MAP addresses wide-ranging health issues and challenges faced by the Palestinian people. You can find out more at map-uk.org
