A MAN accused of trying to abduct a child as she walked behind her mother has been remanded in custody ahead of a trial scheduled for November.
Qasim Shah, 46, from Leeds, allegedly attempted to lead the youngster to his car on August 7 as she walked close to shops in Sherburn-in-Elmet.
The mother of the child stopped to shout at the man when she turned around and saw what the accused was attempting.
It is claimed Shah fled the scene in his car, but was stopped by police and arrested a short time later.
Shah was refused bail on the grounds he may not attend court for his trial, which is set for December 17, but is reliant on a plea being entered on November 17 at York Crown Court.
In denying bail, Judge David Ashurst, the recorder of York, said: āIām satisfied there is a significant risk of this defendant failing to attend his trial out of fear of the consequences of his sentence.ā
