PLANS for a new health centre with a pharmacy and shops at the University of York's Heslington East campus will go on public display on Thursday, September 4.

The proposed scheme would be built on the edge of the campus, and could be used by students as well as university staff and local residents. The plans have been drawn up by Evans Property Group.

It would see the GP's surgery currently on the Heslington West campus, which is run by the Unity Health practice and already serves the local community as well as the student population, relocated and enlarged on the Heslington East site.

Practice manager, Louise Johnston, said: “A new health centre will provide our patients with a single storey, state of the art premises bringing together a wide range of health care professionals under one roof. The location on Heslington East provides our patients with a highly accessible site with favourable public transport services.

Ms Johnston also said that the new development would see patients still registered with Unity Health, and no change to the way patients can see their preferred doctor or nurse.

The University's Registrar David Duncan added: “The site proposed is on the northern edge of the campus at Kimberlow Lane, off Field Lane, making it readily accessible for local people throughout the year, as well as students and staff when they are on campus.

“Alongside the centre, a small supermarket is proposed as are other small shops and a café or restaurant. These again will be available to the public as well as the university community.”

The plans will be on display at Heslington East campus’ Langwith College Glasshouse on Deramore Lane YO10 5GQ between 3pm and 7pm on Thursday.

After the consultation process, a planning application will have to be submitted to and approved by the city council before building can start.

Dr Duncan said: “We hope that as many people as possible will come and see the plans and give us their feedback – which will be extremely valuable ahead of our submission of a planning application.”
