A FOOTBALL fan who died on his way home from a York City game is set to be honoured by supporters.

Cyclists will ride 150 miles from Bootham Crescent to Northampton Town's Sixfields stadium in February to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, after Cobblers fan David Henderson died outside their stadium in January.

The 57-year-old was on his way home when he suffered a heart attack.

The group plans to set off on February 19 and arrive in Northampton three days later before the Minstermen's game against their fellow League Two side.

The Ride to Northampton Team is made up of York City supporters Ian Jones, Dan Waterworth, Ben Nicholson, Adam Livingston, Tom Poole, Joe Fletcher, Craig Atkin, Chris Taylor, Ash Taylor, Nathan Brigham and James Patterson.

Ian Jones, cycle challenge leader, said: "Last season’s fixture will unfortunately be remembered for the passing of Northampton Town supporter David Henderson. Many of the cycle team were at the match and witnessed this very sad incident.

"Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and we wanted to do something positive to help.”

Sharon Oakley, British Heart Foundation fundraising manager for York, says: “We’d like to encourage as many people as possible to support this group of supporters and their fundraising efforts.

"We are a national charity that relies on local support, supporters like Ian Jones and his friends to raise vital funds for us.

"By supporting challenges like the Ride to Northampton, or organising your own, you are helping our life-saving and life-changing work to continue.

"We’re fighting for every heartbeat but we can’t do it without you.”
