THE 60th annual Poppleton Road Allotment Association show will be held this weekend.

This year's show takes place on Saturday at the Holy Redeemer Church Hall in Boroughbridge Road from 2pm, and will include the usual vegetable, fruit, cake and produce stalls in competition, but will also have a new event.

The Alan Elcock Memorial Trophy for large onions has been introduced this year in memory of Alan Elcock, who had a plot on the allotment for many years, and took part in competitions around the area before his death two years ago.

Peter Byrne is one of the show's organisers, and said Mr Elcock's family - including daughter Dawn, felt the award was appropriate.

Mr Byrne said: "I will be happy to see the trophy handed out this weekend.

"He always helped us and was a very, very good gardener who always shared his knowledge around and showed quite a lot, particularly at York Ancient Florists."

The show starts at 2pm, and entries can be submitted at the church hall between 9am and 10am. Admission costs 50p.
