A WET and windy Ladies Day didn't stop the fashionistas of Yorkshire from showing their colours at the Knavesmire.

Racegoers turned out in force for the highlight of York Racecourse's season, and besides the racetrack action there was fierce competition on the "Best Dressed Racegoer" competition.

The racecourse's marketing manager James Brennan said: "Ladies Day always has a bit of a different feel, and we have felt a bit sorry today for the ladies who planned their outfits for the better weather we had earlier in the racing season.

"We've made the best of a fairly unseasonable day, and hopefully people can still go home with some good memories and photographs of themselves and their friends in their outfits."

The trackside filled up in the gaps between heavy showers and fans enjoyed the racing despite the unlucky weather.

Yesterday, Sheila Derbyshire, from Sheffield, was crowned the overall "Best Dressed Festival Racegoer", and walked away with a short break for two to the Marriott Hotel in Dubai, including a trip to the races at Meydan Racecourse.

Sheila will go on to represent York at the Go Racing in Yorkshire Best Dressed final in Doncaster in October.

The weather forecast is looking more promising for the rest of the Ebor meet, James added.

"It looks like it could warm up on Saturday, which could encourage people making their plans for the weekend, or buying that last minute hat."

Tomorrow's racing action will also see the meet's fastest race - the Coolmore Nunthorpe - when Cowthorpe trained Borderlessscott has a chance of his third win in that race.

Crowds well down this year. Personally I think a 3 day Ebor meeting was much better. Also prices are getting higher and higher. 30 quid to get in the grandstand, and 9 quid in centred of course. 4 pounds a pint for beer. Come on York races you'll price yourselves out soon. Don't be greedy.

You can almost feel the anger of anti-racing losers like Woody of the Swan pub. There has been money flowing into the City, people have had an awesome time. Tens of thousands of people yet no riots!

I did hear of the riot vans in the City this morning, due to certain travellers....so there is always that to complain about Woody! Several of them might of been in cheap suits, and you as York's answer to Gok Wan could judge! Muppet.

Too cheap for some, too expensive for others. Some in £80,000 cars some on the bus...bohoo it was as if this was an event open to everyone!

Yahbooo,so what if it is worth a fortune to the City, us Yorkies want peace and quiet, with no tourists at all! The factories will provide us with an income....
