A MULTI-MILLION pound project to improve bathing water across Scarborough has scooped the top prize at an industry award ceremony.

Yorkshire Water worked closely with Morgan Sindall Grontmij joint venture over the course of five years on a £50 million project which ensures the waste water being discharged back into Yorkshire’s coast is cleaner than ever, and it was picked out as Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence Awards for Yorkshire & Humber.

Morgan Sindall Grontmij joint venture, which carried out the work on behalf of Yorkshire Water, collected the award at a ceremony in Sheffield.

Judges said: “We felt this was a worthy winner as the team demonstrated continuous improvement, in reviewing a procedure and process that was working, but did not stand still and wanted to drive efficiency and deliver better value for the client.”

Tony Willey, head of asset solution at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re delighted that this project, which was such a substantial investment in the region over a long period, has been recognised for the way in which it was delivered.

“We’re now looking forward to the benefit it will bring to the area’s beaches for years to come.”

Dave Cole, framework manager for Morgan Sindall Grontmij joint venture, said: “Our team is thrilled to be recognised through receiving this prestigious award and is particularly proud of the fact that that their work will help ensure a cleaner coastline for years to come.”

Yorkshire Water’s investment was part of an effort to raise the standard of all designated bathing waters along Yorkshire’s 150 mile coastline.

The Yorkshire Bathing Water Partnership was formed in 2010, with Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency, local Councils and Welcome to Yorkshire grouping together to tackle a wide range of issues affecting bathing water quality.

The investment in Scarborough includes:

  • A new 30 metre deep, 20 metre wide, storm water storage tank capable of holding four million litres of storm water

  • Three huge storm water pumps capable of pumping 6,500 litres a second

  • Installed five kilometres of new pipework.

  • UV lighting at the Scarborough waste water treatment works to zap the bugs out of the water before it is discharged back into the sea. Built in Canada, the UVfacility is completely unique and the only one of its kind in Yorkshire.
