ARMY veterans joined serving soldiers in York at the weekend at an event to remember comrades.
On Saturday, soldiers from the Royal Dragoon Guards formed up in Tower Street before marching through the city and arriving at their regimental church, Pavement Church in High Ousegate.
Former and serving soldiers attended a service at the church at which there was a laying up of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards Standard.
Lieutenant Colonel Tom Bateman, commanding officer of the Royal Dragoon Guards, said: “The officers and soldiers of the Royal Dragoon Guards have a unique link to the initial British actions of the First World War and to the great city of York.”
On Friday, 150 soldiers from Yorkshire’s cavalry regiment exercised their right to march through York in a colourful ceremony recalling the city’s military past.
The Royal Dragoon Guards marched through York before an inspection of the troops, while two RAF Typhoon fighter jets conducted a flypast, and ending with a special service in the Minster.
This year’s parade took on special significance in light of the First World War centenary.
The regiment’s antecedants were involved in both the first shots fired, and the final cavalry charge, of the war.
