BROADWAY'S post office is set for renovation to become a new "main style" branch, but a local councillor is calling for assurances over access to the shop.

The post office at 44 Broadway will be closed for refurbishments from September 9 until 22, and when it reopens will have a dual height writing desk, a low level serving counter and a hearing loop.

But Fishergate councillor Andy D'Agorne wants to see the broken and uneven forecourt repaired, and the access ramp brought up to standard to make sure wheelchair users can easily get into the branch.

He said: "When the other local branches closed, the poor access was noted and we were promised a new accessible entrance but we are still waiting. There seems little point in introducing disabled facilities inside the shop without upgrading the entrance."

"This is an opportunity for the remaining damaged section in front of the Post office to be brought up to a safe condition."

A Post Office spokesman confirmed that while the branch is already complaint with the Disability Discrimination Act, major improvements to the access will be made during the renovations.
