YORK and the region continued to endure miserable weather over the weekend, but looked to have escaped the worst as Hurricane Bertha passed over Britain yesterday.

Torrential rain for several hours on Friday night left many drains overwhelmed and roads closed or barely-passable, and there were about 70 call outs for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Yesterday, 22 properties in Hunmanby Gap were hit by flooding as was Primrose Valley Holiday Park. Firefighters pumped out water.

Some outdoor events had to make a hurried move inside at the weekend or curtail their programme.

Elsewhere in the UK, the remains of Bertha caused flash flooding and high winds. Wind gusts of more than 40 mph were forecast for last night in York and North Yorkshire, especially in exposed upland areas.

Friday’s downpour also flooded the cellars of The Ainsty pub in Acomb and The Waggon and Horses in Lawrence Street.

Water Lane in York was said to be under two feet of water at one point, and Tadcaster and South Milford were also badly affected.
