HUNDREDS of people have applied for just eight new jobs at a new York furniture store.

Yorkshire-based sofa retailer DFS will open a new 15,000 square foot showroom and store at Clifton Moor Retail Park next month, and has advertised for eight new members of staff. So far, 460 applications have been received.

Dale Goodwin, store manager, said: "We’re really looking forward to bringing a store to York, as a Yorkshire based company it’s even more exciting for us. It’s a good location and the new store will be a great addition to the local retail landscape."

The new store will be the 101st store for DFS estate and is one of five companies to take up residence at the Clifton Moor site, including Jysk, Oak Furniture Land and others.

Ian Dixon, DFS regional sales manager, said: "Our new store will be a true Yorkshire offering. We’re currently recruiting a great bunch of people from the local community and we’re all looking forward to getting the doors open in September. Many of the sofas seen in store will be made in our own factory in South Yorkshire by local craftspeople. We’re very proud to be able to keep manufacturing within the region."
