A COMMUNITY allotment group has transformed a plot of derelict land at Cawood, near Selby, into a community space after winning £500 funding from Skipton Building Society.

Cawood Allotment Society held a celebratory barbeque to mark the opening of the new space, which will give people a place to sit and socialise amongst the allotment plots.

The group, which has eight volunteer committee members, manages the allotments giving locals the opportunity to see the benefits of growing their own fruit and vegetables.

The grant enabled it to purchase grass seed and picnic benches.

Society committee member Mike Cowling said “This is a fantastic space for gardeners to meet and have a sit down to chat about plants and techniques and for families to enjoy.

The money came from the Building Society’s Grassroots Giving programme, launched last year to mark its 160th anniversary.
