A YORK man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a teenager suffered serious head injuries in a late-night incident in York city centre.

The 20-year old man, who has also been charged with resisting arrest, is due to appear before York Magistrates today.

North Yorkshire Police said an 18-year-old local man was injured and remained in hospital in a serious, but stable condition.

The incident happened at about 4.30am on Saturday on the pelican crossing in Nessgate, at the junction with Spurriergate.

It led to the road’s closure for several hours while police launched an investigation, with buses sent on long diversions until just after 8am.

Police have said the force was called by the ambulance service, which said the man had been found lying injured in the road.

Officers have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Maria Taylor, who is leading the investigation, said: “If you witnessed the assault, I urge you to come forward and contact the police, if you have not already done so.

“I am also keen to speak to anyone who was in the Nessgate corner area around the time of the incident, who has any information which could help this investigation, and ask that they get in touch.”
