A BAND made up of students from Selby are a step away from the big time after signing up to a rock legend's label.

And Premonition, whose members are all studying at Selby College, could soon be celebrating on stage at Reading and Leeds Festival if there next chance of stardom proves successful.

Not only is the foursome pondering the luxuries of fame, they are one performance away from the festivals, as they compete against 12 other acts at the Centre Stage talent contest at the O2 Academy in Leeds today.

The band, made up of 17-year-old students singer Robbie Cliff, lead guitarist Ryan Mellor Davis, bassist Richy Jones and drummer Max Shaw, are competing for the top prize of a slot on the BBC Introducing Stage at both Leeds and Reading festivals in August, and a runners-up prize of a supporting slot for a major act at the First Direct Arena.

"This will be the most important 12 minutes of our lives," the band said this week.

"So come along and support us on what should be a fantastic night at the 02."

The contest line-up has been described as the strongest ever in the competition's history with all proceeds going to Martin House Children's Hospice at Boston Spa. After successfully coming through the heats, Premonition have raised more than £1,000 in donations to take part in the final.

The band will have the backing of nearly 100 fans with a 52-seat coach leaving Park Street, Selby, for the venue on the evening.

Tickets for the show, which starts at 7pm, are still available priced £6.50 and £4.50 for students.
