A MAN has been arrested after a man died falling from a cliff in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police have appealed to walkers who were in the Kettleness and Runswick Bay area on Friday, July 18, after a 51-year-old man fell from a cliff at Kettleness Point at about 11.20pm.

The injured man, from the Cleveland area, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was pronounced dead, and police are carrying out an investigation to determine the circumstances which led to his death.

Police said a man in his twenties from the Whitby area was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the incident and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Temporary Detective Superintendent Steve Smith, said: "This is a tragic incident involving two climbers who appear to have got into difficulty, resulting in the death of one of them. A full investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened. The family of the dead man are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.”

Police believe at least two walkers were in the area at about the time of the incident, and have urged anyone who was nearby from 10.45am onwards to contact Scarborough CID on 101 with any information.
