A BUILDINGon a former Selby shipyard caught fire during violent thunder and lightning storms early this morning.

Firefighters were called to a blaze on Shipyard Industrial estate - the former Cochrane's Shipyard on Carr Street - at around 3am, when around a dozen people rang 999 to report a building on fire.

Many believed the 40 x 20 single storey store building had been struck by lightning, but the fire service is yet to confirm the cause of the blaze.

Two fire crews from Selby spent four hours battling the flames and protecting nearby buildngs with large jets of water and ground monitors.

They were due to leave the site by 8am, but will be back later in the day to check the situation.

Earlier, rail services between Leeds and Selby had been delayed after a lightning strike caused signalling problems.

Trains were disrupted between 9.15 and 10.20pm.
