AN 88-year-old pedestrian who suffered a serious injury in a crash in York is in a critical condition in hospital.

The woman was walking in Water Lane, Clifton, close to the Clifton Health Centre, when she was struck by a green lorry which reversed into her, North Yorkshire Police said.

Staff from the health centre initially treated the pensioner, who was conscious and breathing, before she was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with what police called "a serious leg injury".

Fiona Waters, senior practice nurse manager at the health centre, Dr Paula Taylor, Dr Mark Howsen, Dr Peter Kemp and senior healthcare assistant Andrea Hunt gave first aid to the woman after the accident.

Fiona said: "We administered oxygen and first aid and kept her comfortable, covered the injury and put a pillow under her head. We often have emergencies, but nothing that extreme.

"I've no idea how long it took paramedics to get there, as I was concentrating on the patient, but it wasn't really long at all. You just get on with it. The adrenaline just kicks in and you get on with it."

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the woman remains in the LGI in a "critical but stable" condition, and urged anyone who saw the incident to contact them on 101.
