A MAN has been arrested by North Yorkshire Police after jumping into the River Ouse twice today.

The 33-year-old man, who was originally thought to be aged in his forties, was wearing only boxer shorts when he jumped from Ouse Bridge into the river at King's Staith at about 3pm.

He then climbed out, and jumped back in, according to North Yorkshire Police.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the scene but were not required to rescue the man, who got out of the river himself, but appeared to have suffered a head injury.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service have also been called to the scene, and the man was treated by paramedics before he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and taken into custody.

Dave Benson, founder of the York Rescue Boat charity, said the incident showed more still needed to be done to make clear the dangers of York's rivers.

He said: "I'm just amazed people are still doing it really. "There have been all these warnings on social media and Facebook and it's still not getting through."
