Sixty years after she first visited Castle Museum as a child, an internationally best selling author officially opened its First World War exhibition.
Kate Atkinson has brought her children and grandchildren to the museum at the Eye of York to see Kirkgate and the other displays that she enjoyed as a child.
It inspired her first novel "Behind the Scenes at the Museum" which won the 1995 Whitbread Book of the Year Prize.
As she toured the suite of exhibition rooms specially created on the first floor for "1914 - When the World Changed Forever " she spoke of how she was honoured she was to be chosen to officially open the exhibition, which is the centrepiece of a £1.7 million project at the museum.
"It is my favourite museum" she said. "It feels like I am coming full circle."
The exhibition which looks at the revolutionary effect of the war on life and the terror it created will be open for five years and change to reflect the different events of the First World War.
