DOZENS of cows escaped their field and wandered about York housing estates this weekend.

Residents in Woodthorpe woke early on Saturday morning to see some 30 to 40 cows loose in the streets.

Jessica Venning-Brown, of Sherringham Drive, in  Woodthorpe, said: “We saw police and a farmer and they walked towards Foxwood

"I used to live in Nidderdale so we’re used to it but it’s strange in an urban area of York.”

She said the cows were eventually directed through Foxwood into a field near Lidl.
