CREATURES great and small could be in with a chance of winning a year's supply of food following the launch of Thompsons' annual Pet Show.

Owners are being invited to show off their adorable animals, whether they are cats, dogs, rabbits and more unusual pets for the event, which is now in its fourth year.

Organisers say the show, which will be held on Saturday, August 2, promises to be bigger and better than previous years with new classes to attract even more entrants as well as the traditional favourites.

Staff at Thompsons Country Store, based in Murton Lane opposite the York Auction Centre, are preparing for the day which aims to offer something for all the family during the summer holidays.

More than 400 people enjoyed some animal magic at the pet show last year when there were at least 130 entries for eight categories. The wide-ranging classes include the small animal contest, the dog 'most like their owner', best large dog and best rescue dog and best veteran dog.

Winners in some classes will be able to grab the top prize of a year’s supply of pet food.

Last year's winners included Peter, a lionhead rabbit, in the small animal contest, while the best bird class was won by Harvey and Henrietta, buff Orpington and buff Orpington cross black chickens, and Koko the beard dragon was crowned best exotic pet.
