A YORK man who was made an MBE after working for nearly 50 years with young people in youth clubs across York and running activities for the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme has died, aged 82.

Michael Hutchinson, husband of the late Pam and father to Andrew, Carol, Julie and Richard, died in York Hospital after a short illness.

The grandfather and great-grandfather's funeral was taking place at 12.45pm today at St Mark's Church, Rawcliffe, followed by a private cremation.

Mr Hutchinson, of Clifton Park, was brought up in West Heslerton and worked on the railways for 40 years, gave up his time voluntarily to help hundreds of children at youth groups in Chapelfields , the YWCA Club in Cumberland Street and the Melbourne Youth Club in Fishergate.

He also helped start the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme in York and acted as an outdoor instructor for it taking, young people on trips to the North York Moors.

He also competed for the York Railway Institute team in the York Quiz League, and was a keen rugby player for the club in his younger years.
