A YORK woman who puts her long life down to a love of dancing is today celebrating her 100th birthday.

Liz Simpson is marking her centenary at home at Willow Court care home, near Walmgate, surrounded by family and friends.

Mrs Simpson was born in Guisborough on July 3 1914, one month and one day before Britain declared war on Germany, and grew up in a family of seven children before becoming a cook and later meeting her husband Reg - who she describes as "a lovely man" - in Thornton le Dale.

The couple shared a love of dance which was an important part of their lives, and Mrs SImpson continued her passion until she was 92.

A healthy lifestyle is the secret to her longevity, she added: "I don't smoke and I don't drink, and I like walking. I love fresh air."

As well as the family celebrations, Mrs Simpson said she was looking forward to receiving a telegram from the Queen.

"I shall like that very much, and I will have it framed and displayed where everyone can see it," she added.
