A GROUP of York veterans enjoyed a day out in Whitby when they hitched a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The four men, Ken Smith, George Meredith, Burt Barritt and Dennis Haydock, whose ages range from 89 – 91, spent the day at the seaside town, accompanied by family member of the Normandy Veterans’ Association York branch and organiser Nick Beilby.

Once in Whitby, they indulged in the popular seaside activity of tucking into fish and chips and ice-cream.

Mr Beilby said: “They had an interesting day and because they went with their medals on, a lot of people wanted to chat to them and hear their stories.

“It has taken them a while to recognise that people like to thank them.

“This gives them a chance to have a nice day out, to remember and reminisce together and it is a way for us to say thank you.”
