THE wife of a man who was regarded as an inspiration for budding young writers in the north has died.

Judith Bradley, 83, who had lived with her husband, Alfred, in Marygate, York, had recently lived in Beaumont House care home in Stamford Bridge.

Mr Bradley was in charge of BBC radio drama in the north from 1959 to 1980 but died aged 65 in 1991.

BBC Radio Drama North in conjunction with the BBC Writersroom set up the Alfred Bradley Bursary Award in 1992 and for 2013-14 this had risen to £5,000 to encourage new writing and writers with the prospect of a Radio 4 drama commission.

Mrs Bradley was the eldest granddaughter of the famous artist Eric Gill.

Mrs Bradley’s funeral will be at St Wilfred’s Church, York, on Thursday July 3.
