YORK residents were told to stay indoors during a major police search lasting more than five hours.

Officers were called to Strensall in the early hours of Sunday amid concerns for the safety of a local 18-year-old woman.

They were called at 4.45am and used officers, police dogs and a helicopter before finding the woman safe at 10am.

Police said they were called following concerns for the safety of the woman, during a domestic incident involving a man.

The suspect, a 25-year-old York man, was tracked by police to the Strensall area, where he was arrested.

Later on Sunday a second man, aged 22 and also from York, was arrested in the New Earswick area on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: "As officers searched for the suspect in the Strensall area, they asked members of the public to remain inside to allow the police dogs who were involved in the search, to carry out a clear sweep of the area."

Officers thank members of the public for their cooperation and understanding during the incident.

The two arrested men remain in police custody.
